Dancer-choreographer Arthur Aviles, the co-founder of BAAD! the dance and theater troupe headquartered in the BankNote building on Barretto Street, was one of six artists honored by New York City on Nov. 10.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg presented a Mayor’s Awards for Arts in Culture to Aviles in a ceremony at Harlem’s Apollo Theater.
The mayor praised Mr. Aviles for choosing “to make his artistic home” in the Bronx. “He brings the excitement of contemporary dance to local, national, and international audiences,” Bloomberg said.
The Mayor’s Awards for Arts and Culture were created in 1974 to honor individuals and organizations, who have contributed significantly to the cultural life of New York City. The Bloomberg Administration revived the awards in 2004.
