The streets of Hunts Point may seem to be in a state of continual disarray, but the inconveniences are temporary, say city officials.
Here’s what’s new in the city’s attempts to spruce up a few streets on the peninsula, under the auspices of its Streetscape Beautification Project:
Sewers have been installed along Hunts Point Ave between Spofford and Garrison Avenues, to improve drainage. Concrete sections have been installed at bus stops along those same streets, replacing asphalt at some curbs and sidewalks.
Cobblestones are being installed along that same stretch.
Several improvements are projected to be done before the end of the year. These include the planting of new trees with tree guards; landscaping upgrades, including a planted median with shrubs on Hunts Point Ave at Spofford; the replacement of some street lights; and a new bike lane on Hunts Point Ave.
Residents will have to put up with some temporary irritants as a result of the work. There will be increased construction noise between 7 a.m. and dusk on weekdays, some traffic lane changes, roadway closings and delays, and the usual dust, dirt and mud that results from street work.
Street parking restrictions will continue to be in effect, with signs posted in advance. There is also a possibility of short-term phone, cable and electric interference resulting from the construction.
The Hunts Point Economic Development Corporation is serving as liaison between residents and contractors or city officials for the project. They can be reached with questions or concerns at 718-842-1717, ext. 226, or by emailing Jeremie Sautter at jsautter@hpedc.org.
