Anthony’s interesting odyssey

After six years as boatbuilding director at Hunts Point non-profit Rocking the Boat, Anthony Archino has announced he will be stepping aside.

Fittingly, Archino will be rowing, as well as sailing, into the sunset.

Archino will embark on a rowing and sailing trip to Maine’s Cranberry Islands from Rocking the Boat’s site next to Hunts Point Riverside Park later this spring. He says the trip is intended “as a way of challenging myself,” as well as a way to raise money for the organization.

Archino will make his way up the coast in Eden, a 17-foot boat built by students in the program.

“Rocking the Boat taught me to appreciate how boatbuilding and being on the water can be powerful tools for educating youth,” Archino wrote in an email announcing his departure from the award-winning group.

Archino is asking those who wish to contribute, and “to help me get out with a bang,” to donate to Rocking the Boat through his blog, http://tonysbigrow.posterous.com.

Progress of the trip will be visible on the blog as Archino makes his way north during the summer.
