Third-to-sixth grade girls from the Police Athletic League on Longwood Avenue and from PS 48 Elementary School joined young girls across the city on March 18 to celebrate the second annual GirlSport Day.
As celebrations go, this one was fairly rigorous. The young girls from all five boroughs jointly tallied over 11,000 sit ups and 26,000 jumping jacks, and jumped rope over 25,000 times. As if that weren’t exhausting enough to contemplate, they also jumped 2,012 combined feet in the long jump and completed the bean bag drop, obstacle course and hop along stations for under three hours combined for all the girls.
The PAL’s executive director, Felix A. Urrutia urged more young people to join the fun.
“The goal of PAL’s Annual GirlSport Day is to engage girls throughout New York City in physical activity, improve their self-esteem and give them the opportunity to share their fitness accomplishments with their friends,” he said.
The Annual GirlSport Day is part of the organization’s after school programs, encouraging the city’s first-to-eighth graders to get active and adopt healthy lifestyles while they’re young.
