Regisration has begun for the Crotona Achievement Program, a summer program at the East Bronx Academy for the Future aimed at helping boys in grades 4 through 8 to do better in school.
The program meets Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from July 9-Aug. 10 at the Academy, 1716 Southern Blvd., below the 174th St. subway station on the 2 and 5 lines.
Students enrolled in the program study reading, math, science, journalism, history, grammar, and geography.
They also take trips to local and state parks and to cultural centers and spend time swimming, painting and in music and drama programs.
Other activities include chess, athletics, thinking games and discussions of current events.
Leaders of the program say that students improve their schoolwork and also gain maturity and leadership ability.
Registration is by appointment and can be done any time from now through June. For an appointment, call the Crotona Center at (718) 861-1426. The registration fee of $120 may be waived according to need.
Those seeking to register are required to bring their report card.
Crotona Center is part of the South Bronx Educational Foundation, Inc. Inspired by Catholic social teaching and the spirit of Opus Dei – a personal Prelature of the Catholic Church, the Foundation was started in 1988. Its programs are open to all, regardless of race or creed.
