School community chips in to help

Relatively affluent web surfers aren’t the only contributors to Bronx Charter School for the Arts. The school community plays its part.

“We have a cool story from last year,” said Gretchen Wagner Liga, the school’s Director of Development.

Alan Davis, a music specialist, placed a particularly ambitions proposal on the Donors.Choose site. He wanted to buy instruments and equipment costing roughly $8000.

“Usually a typical proposal runs at a couple of hundred dollars,” said Liga.

With the deadline approaching, Davis still needed $200. Luckily, the school was holding “Family Math Night,” as the hands of the internet clock ticked toward ending the listing. Even though Math Night wasn’t a fundraiser, the staff announced to those in attendance how close Davis was to meeting the goal.

“Members of the community, staff and parents all chipped in,” said Liga, with an appreciative smile.

“We were able to add more clarinetists to the band,” as a result, said Davis. “We upped the quality of the instruments that our advanced band students use to rehearse, perform, and audition for music programs outside of our school.”

A version of this story appeared in the December 2009/January 2010 issue of The Hunts Point Express.
